Here are the main ones: Florence Tango Festival The annual Tango Festival brings top international tango dancers to perform at the Saschall theatre. The festival offers an evening programme that includes shows, art exhibitions, workshops, dinners and much more. 2008 guests are Silvana Torres and Ivan Alvarez, Javier Rogdriguez and Andrea Missè, Patricia Hilliges and Matteo Panero, to name just a few. Location Saschall - Teatro di Firenze; Apr - May 2008 (annual). Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Founded in 1933, the oldest music festival in Italy, and one of the most famous, the Maggio Musicale in Florence features two months of concerts, ballet, opera and exhibitions. 2008 celebrates its 71th edition. Apr - Jun 2008 (annual) Fashion is well represented too, and you can't miss the famous Pitti Immagine Uomo, a show attracting international buyers for the coming autumn/winter menswear collections. Worldwide Florentine Carnival This is an opportunity for pre-Lenten parties with the locals of some of Tuscany's most beautiful towns. You can enjoy the festivities in Florence itself or in the nearby villages. A fusion between speech and song, which ultimately led to the invention of opera. Lungarno Amerigo Vespucci; 3 February 2008 Scoppio del Carro On Easter Sunday the Florentine citizens gather in the Piazza del Duomo to watch 'Colombina', a rocket flying out of the famous Duomo to ignite a wooden cart-structure posted in the square outside. The Carro pulled by two white oxen, leaves from Via del Prato for the Piazza del Duomo, together with costumed revellers, clerical representatives and city officials. Location Piazza del Duomo; April 2008 (annual) Calcio Storico brings four teams of 27 youths each, facing each other in the Calcio Storico, a 15th-century style tournament of fighting and football in Piazza Santa Croce. In 2007 the event was cancelled and at present there are no details for the next edition. Location Piazza Santa Croce; Jun 2008 (annual) For kids or just for your inner child pleasures, there are even more choices. Holiday on Ice where forty international athletes present spectacular skating, giving life to a tale inspired by the adventures of Bugs Bunny and by Jules Verne's novel, Around the World in Eighty Days. Location Palasport; Mar - Apr 2008 (annual) Artisan Chocolate Fair Top chocolatiers from all over Tuscany, chocolate sampling, games, shows and live music. In previous years there have also been photography workshops and other interactive events. Location Piazza Santa Croce; 24 - 27 Jan 2008 (annual) Festival of Rificolina shows children carrying lanterns through the streets of the city. A theory about the origins of this festival links it to an important market, from where peasants that lived far from the city would leave before dark, carrying candles to light the way. Location Piazza Primo Maggio; Sept 2008 (annual) Winter in Florence - an impressively wide-range of shows, events, concerts and exhibitions. Visitors can discover the many faces of this enchanting, ancient city. There are guided tours, parties, film screenings, concerts and performances, readings, and a huge variety of cultural activities to take part in, theatre performances and shows. On the spot - a spectacular Christmas market with a huge Christmas tree. 1 Nov - 29 Feb If you are passionate about sport, Florence is the place. Italian Moto GP is hosted at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello and brings as much passion and partisan support as any event in the Road Racing World Championships calendar. Italians simply love motorbikes just like Formula One, and they are blessed with idols to worship too. Location Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello; Jun 2008 Ponte Vecchio International Approach Championship is an international golf competition which takes place on a platform under the central arch of the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Six shots per match for each of the sixteen professional players to hit three floating greens. Huge TV screens are set up around the city, for the public to follow the competition.
